Do you have to carefully select first gear in your 6-speed NC Miata or you slip into reverse? Does it seems something used to separate those gears and now that's gone? It's likely this upper shifter plate that creates the "gate" between 1st and reverse. It can also affect 2nd gear engagement. Essentially it wears out and the shifter can wander into reverse. Replacing it is fairly easy. You remove the center console, the shifter insulator, and with 3 bolts it comes right out.

I can't recall if part was Mazda of facsimile it was neverthelessless a dead ringer for the part it replaced which was shot to Hell. World of difference shifting wise with new part installed. Also fast shipping by R/Speed.
